Blog Project 3:Asia - Turkey

1.More talks needed on 'high-speed rail link'

Summary

There will be more negotiations on geopolitics, technological standards and funding issues for high-speed rail link between China and Turkey. First, the rail via through Xinjiang, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Bulgaria and Turkey so there should be agreements with countries related to high-speed rail project. Second, China already has technological capability to construct the rail with western neighbor countries, but more negotiations with other countries are needed. Third, total investment in the rail project will be about $75 billion, and this project will raise the GDP of China and related countries by $375 billion. The completed project will be regarded as a new Silk Road.

Persuasive
I think China's rail project is innovative and beneficial to related countries because of above reasons, so I want to suggest similar project to South Korea. South Korea's territory is surrounded by sea three sides and blocked north side by North Korea; Korea is an island actually. Therefore, if South Korea contract with North Korean and succeed to develop rail route, both Korea's GDP will raise and it will lead to more peaceful relationship between them while cooperating. The Korean Silk Road should be born.

2.Turkey leads world scrap metal imports by far

Summary

The Steel Exporters' Association announces that Turkey imports 21% of total scrap metal imports internationally in 2012. The association points out that Turkey's immense proportion of imports is due to the lack of domestic supply, insufficient amounts of steel in old buildings and the failure to recycle electronic devices. However, importing scrap is benefiting strategy of Turkey because they make surplus by recycling and creating new employments.

Persuasive
I choose this article because Korea is also big scrap metal importer and there are lots of scrap disposal plant in Korea. I think importing scrap metals is very good policy because of environmental and economical reasons. First, it reduces the waste of resources and prevent pollution from heavy metals. Also it makes profit by recycling and new base of economic activity; many old retired Korean earn a living by recycling. Importing and reusing the scrap metal is benefiting.

3.Quack Chinese engineers flock to Turey, alarming authorities

Summary

Recently, Turkey's legislative change enable quack Chinese engineers to work without social security and creating unfair circumstances. Free from social security system, Chinese workers's labor cost drop and they can get a job easily and it heightens their values compare to other foreign workers.

Persuasive
In Korea, there are similar situations to Turkey in that there are many foreign workers in country. However, foreign worker's rights are not considered significantly in Korea, so there should be wise policy for foreign workers. Korea exports many workers to Germany in 1980's and accumulate huge profits: it is the driving force of Korea's growth. Therefore we should look back our histories and treat foreign workers like our 1980's people.
